DC-CORE members have voted to support the following draft Resolution which will be formally proposed at the WTU's next Representative Assembly on Tuesday, May 14th.
The statement was drafted by WTU Executive Board and DC-CORE Member Dieter Lehmann Morales:
"The Washington Teachers Union Stands with Peaceful Student and Faculty Protests at George Washington University in the Name of Solidarity with Palestine
As representatives of the educators in Washington, D.C., the Washington Teachers Union (WTU) stands firmly with the peaceful student and faculty protests at George Washington University.
We recognize the importance of fostering an environment where students are encouraged to engage in critical dialogue and activism, particularly on issues of social justice and human rights. The Palestinian struggle for liberation and justice is a deeply significant global issue that demands attention and action.
The student encampments serve as powerful reminders of the ongoing oppression faced by the Palestinian people, including the denial of basic human rights, displacement, and violence perpetuated by occupation forces. By amplifying their voices and raising awareness, these students are playing a crucial role in advancing the cause of justice and equality for Palestinians.
As educators, we believe in the power of education to promote understanding, empathy, and solidarity across borders. We commend the courage and determination of the students who are standing up for what they believe in, despite facing backlash and intimidation.
We urge George Washington University to respect the rights of students to peacefully protest and express their solidarity with Palestine. Furthermore, we call on university administrations to engage constructively with student activists, listen to their concerns, and work towards creating a campus environment that is inclusive and supportive of all communities.
In the spirit of solidarity and justice, the Washington Teachers Union reaffirms its commitment to standing with the Palestine solidarity movement and supporting the rights of students to advocate for a more just and equitable world."
